The Region of Waterloo is strategically located near the centre of Southwestern Ontario, about 70 mi or100 km from Toronto, 100 miles or 160 kilometers from Buffalo, New York, and 185 mi or 300 km from Detroit, Michigan.
The main geographical feature of the Region is the Grand River running through many of the areas towns and cities and has played a major part in the way the region has developed.
In the census taken in 2006, the Region's population was a bit more than 450,000 and it was the 11th most populous census metropolitan area in Canada. The major cities in the Waterloo Region are Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge and it also includes numerous smaller towns and villages as well as a large and prosperous rural area.
Kitchener is the largest municipality in the region and the seat of the Waterloo Regional Municipality. In the 2006 census the population of Kitchener was was a shade over 200,000. The City of Waterloo situated beside Kitchener has has just under 100,000 residents. Waterloo also has in excess of 20,000 non-resident post-secondary students registered at its two universities. The two cities share a common border and together are often called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.
Cambridge, the other major city in the area is located in the south eastern part of Waterloo Region with a population of just over 120,000. Cambridge came into existence in 1973 by the merging of the towns of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local residents felt the merger was a "shotgun marriage" pushed on them by the Province of Ontario.
In the first decade of the new millenium The Waterloo area is among the most vibrant and fastest growing regions of Canada with some of the best farm land in Ontario, two well respected Universities, a very stable financial industry, diversified industrial production and a burgeoning high tech sector anchored in enterprises like Research in Motion and other spinoff businesses from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.
Families thinking about settling in the Region will find many varied employment opportunities, an exciting and varied cultural life, and schools that are second to none. K-W real estate is also considerably cheaper than similar properties in other nearby cities such as Toronto or Ottawa.
Indeed, people living in Waterloo Region have the best of both worlds. They have the more friendly and pleasant atmosphere found in a smaller urban area while being ideally situated to take advantage of the amenities of major urban centres such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
